The History of Cape Villas — 1999 to 2022

1999 to 2001 — A New Beginning

In October 1999, Nick Ray Ball — a Cubase MIDI network programmer, fashion photographer and Apple Mac designer was invited by his girlfriend Kate Thompson a senior director and A&R superstar with Universal Music Publishing UK and together they journeyed from their home in London England for a beach and mountain holiday in Cape Town and a safari in Kruger Park South Africa.

At first, Nick Ray did not wish to go, sighting the Pre-Black Lives Matter protests in the 1886 film Lethal Weapon 2, but was convinced by his band members (half of whom were black and had rejoiced at the end of apartheid in 1994) to try it out.

It was only meant to be a 7-day holiday, but so enamoured with its beauty and its people on their fourth day, they bought an apartment, and later built a beautiful villa in Camps Bay, with a heated rock linked swimming pool, an outdoor jacuzzi extended out of the entertainment area and custom designed open plan office with pristine views of the Ocean that would serve as the office for Cape Villas for their first few years.

The only disappointment in 1999, was the real estate agents had talked about the 'Millennium Rent' as if it were a real money spinner, but in fact, it netted but a pittance. Not to be deterred, back in London in 2000, whilst awaiting his and his now wife Kate Ball’s (They were married on top of Table Mountain) work permits to be issued, Nick Ray swopped his skill set from Cubase music network programming, graphic design and photography to web and software design, bought the domain name www.CapeVillas.com and others and in 2001 on arriving at Cape Town in his and Kates Camps Bay villa, adorned with 50 gold and platinum disks form Kates very successful music career, Nick Ray Ball launched the web design company Cape Go and the luxury vacations rentals company Cape Villas, in the hopes of attracting a new breed of UK and International travellers to share the beauty and majesty of Cape Town. It had, after all, only taken only 4 days for Nick Ray and Kate to arrive, fall in love with Cape Town and decide to not only come back but to emigrate.

2002 to 2004 — Virtual Tours and Cape Villas

Nick Rays' first hires were apprentice web developer Mike Enslin and Html web coder and socialite Seth Rotherham, at first as CapeGo.com they created well ahead of their time Macromedia Flash virtual tours and complex websites. But there was no market, Nick Ray called Real Estate company Pam Golding asking them if they wished to use their unique product, but the price per property was too high, and the nice man at Pam Golding suggested 'Why don’t you create your own Luxury Property Company.' So, Nick Ray picked from a list of web domains he bought in 2000 the name CapeVillas.com and the rest is history, indeed this history you are now reading.

About the virtual tours - As far as we can tell these really were the first virtual tours that were created in Flash, anywhere in the world, four years later Google would go on to use similar technology to add Steet view to Google Maps, but did so in a far less attractive way, and as I said 4 years later.
